That's What They All Say

Last night I returned a cell phone to the store because it kept dropping calls. As I was ready to leave with the new one, the young man quietly informed me the charger wasn't in the box with the returned phone and bring it by when I had time. I told him I would go home right then and get it. The other clerk across the room jokingly said, "That's what they all say."

I hate that we cannot afford to trust people's word anymore. I hate that every item bought at the drugstore has a sticker on it that will cause alarms to sound if the item has not been paid for. The stickers are usually placed right over important instructions or ingredients. They make me crazy. I hate that we can't open packaging easily anymore.

I realize that losses attributed to thieves are exorbitant and this is part of retail's remedy. Thievery was never a temptation to me. I don't need anything that is not mine. I do not struggle with coveting.

I went home straightway and brought the charger back to the store.
