Significant Other

I hear this term often.

I was watching a lawn improvement show the other day and this older woman introduced one of the helpers of the crew as her significant other.

It threw me. Why would she call him that instead of sweetheart, boyfriend or even lover?

Maybe it is because they have agreed their relationship has limitations which include everything but marriage.
