Do We Know?

A couple years ago there was a show on television trying to find the worst singer in America. The producers thought it would be entertaining.

The contest included the twist that the person who won didn't know they were actually winning because they were the worst. In their mind they thought they were going to be an overnight sensation. They sang with abandon.

There are those of us who believe we are the best at something when we are not very good at all. We are clueless.

At some point in our lives either our mother or maybe someone we regard as some sort of expert told us we were the best. We believe them with our whole heart. Meanwhile, others cringe and we don't catch their discomfort.

I am amazed at the many who try to become the next American Idol. They stand with such conviction, look the judges right in the eye and wail away. Simon tries to stop them - they then think maybe a different song or key will work and they keep trying and it becomes worse and worse.

If you are a good friend, do you tell? If you are a good friend, do you listen with a smile on your face and love in your heart?

Poor ignorant exuberance.
